Atheists are welcome in Unitarian Universalist churches and will get no pressure to "convert" to anything. www.uua.org

Plenty of political organization and activism, too.

I found your article very thought provoking. Some of the comments/suggestions are similar to some of the thoughts I have been thinking when it comes to the issue of Nationalism Christianity and the issue of idealogic Supreme Court Justices destroying the Separation of Church and State as mentioned in our US ConstitutionI

Really good article! Regardless of one's religious upbringing, religious institutions are very good at providing support for its adherents. This can be in the form of a social environment where one can interact with generally like-minded people, assistance with major life changes and challenges, even help finding a mate. Such interactions and support are marginal or nonexistent for those of us who are are not involved in an organized religious practice. Like you stated, atheism is a big tent, but for many of us, particularly in rural areas, it is a very lonely one.
